Autumn is truly upon us and as we find ourselves hurtling towards the festive season, this is the perfect time to consider how we might find ourselves in the best fettle to enjoy the frivolities. As a Nutritional Therapist I’d love to share my 3 top tips:
Sleep: In times gone by, we would have slept and woken according to the sun, now it’s all too easy to ignore our natural body rhythms and find ourselves burning the midnight oil. Not only essential for immune health but studies have also shown a link between poor sleep, weight gain, poor gut and brain health. Most expert agree optimum sleep is somewhere between 7-8 hrs. Dimming the lights, avoiding screens for 1-2hr before bed, soaking in a Epsom Salt bath are all supportive interventions to ensure a good night’s sleep – your body will most certainly thank you!
Bin the sugar: Not only can this help banish afternoon energy slumps and optimise weight loss, but studies indicate that refined sugars can suppress your immune system for hours after eating. So, step back from those refined carbs and swap out the cereal for porridge, snack on nuts and grab a warming soup rather than a sarnie.
Eat a rainbow: Aim to eat a plethora of colour every day, focus on veg and fruit high in vitamins C, A, and phytonutrients that support the immune system. Opting for leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower), peppers, sweet potatoes, and squashes. Adding brightly coloured berries to morning porridge or pair with yoghurt sprinkled with nuts for a fantastic way to boost those all-important nutrients to ensure winter wellness.
